Order — Palo Alto Goes Modern

City Hall, peeps over an early 1900s Craftsman cottage, Palo Alto, 2016

The 8-story Civic Center was built in 1969, and it rises from the Civic Plaza on Hamilton Street. Now known as the City Hall, it’s a modern building that sets the architectural order for today’s Palo Alto downtown.

When designing a new Civic Center in 1969, Palo Alto broke from the usual California Mediterranean style and abandoned classic columns, too. Gone were the Greek columns so popular in the 19th century, and in their stead were unbroken verticals from the ground floor to the roof.

As you walk the downtown, there are good views of the City Hall. Here is a gallery from a walk I took last Winter. (Click on any image for a larger view.)

Have you walked your downtown recently?

Cheers, Carto
