Traffic is a complete mess in the city this beautiful Sunday morning. Nothing new about that. Winged Victory stands atop Dewey’s Column. Her spear points at the construction below.

Victory atop the Dewey Monument in Union Square, San Francisco, 1954
Something Old: Stockton Street, 1954. The TWA sign and building are gone; City of Paris is now Nieman Marcus (the dome was saved); the Grace Building and Macy’s are still there.
Look at the guy in the tan hat. Is that what men wore in the 50’s? Well, now it’s 60 plus years later and we don’t wear silly looking clothes any more, do we? On a lark I drove to the city Yesterday to see if I could replicate this photo from 1954.

Winged Victory on her column above Christmas tree and Construction, Union Square, San Francisco, 2015
Something New; The Christmas tree is up already, and a major construction project seems to be underway, which made it impossible to replicate the old view of Stockton St (looking from Stockton to Powell). Victory is still standing on Dewey’s Column, but the buildings have changed since 1954.
The old photo was take with an Argus C3 on Kodachrome film and scanned to digital. The new photos were taken with my iPhone6 through the car window.
Cheers, Carto
