Ornate—Crystal Carriage

“Mother Load” a child’s carriage made of crystalline sugar, by Timothy Horn, De Young Museum, 2008

Made of inedible crystalline sugar, steel, and plywood: the ornate Mother-Load  is a child-sized carriage by Australian sculptor Timothy Horn. The rolling sculpture was included in Horn’s exhibition Bitter Suite, which opened in Boston, traveled to the De Young, and then went to the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, CA in 2010.

The exhibit was an ironic tribute to San Francisco’s famed sugar heiress Big Alma Spreckels. There was no love lost between Big Alma, an infamous nude model until she married millionaire Adolph Spreckels, and the socially-conscious De Young sisters, daughters of the founder of the De Young museum. Big Alma, after being snubbed by the De Youngs, founded the Legion of Honor Museum to rival the De Young Museum. The museums are now merged. Wonder what Big Alma would think of that? Bitter or Sweet?
