Students Masks inspired by African Dogon People, 2015 Cultural Kaleidoscope at Palo Alto Art Center

Cultural Kaleidoscope — Dogon Masks by First Graders

This vivid mask was inspired by the Dogon people of Mali in northwest Africa. Masks on this theme were created for the 2015 Cultural Kaleidoscope exhibition by first graders attending Cesar Chavez & Green Oaks Academy in East Palo Alto and Fairmeadow School in Palo Alto.

The 2015 exhibit,

The students were introduced to the ceremonial use of African masks in dancing and musical events that bring the whole tribal community together. Students learned that masks are made to represent animals, ancestors, and deities, which protect the tribe from harm.
— The student’s artist teacher was Claude Ferguson.
