Roadside Crypts

The fall color is coming quickly to southern New Hampshire. Maples are turning red.

The grey sky and fog are down to the tree-line, and it is a chilly 47 degrees. It is wet also: the storm front passed through leaving an inch and a half of rain.

We want to go for a walk, so we head for a back road that is mostly dry. But first I need to drive to the outfitters to buy a wool vest.

Bundled up to keep warm, we begin a walk through the woods. On the left side of the road are several crypts. These fascinating stone vaults were once used to hold the dead until Spring when the frost leaves the ground and graves could be dug.

The grey stone matches perfectly the grey sky. Time for a brisk walk back to our lodging.
