Bliss: Dancing on the Great Lawn

Bliss dances on The Great Lawn, near 9th and Avenue of the Palms on Treasure Island. This colossal sculpture by Marco Cochrane stands 40 feet tall and is lighted at night.

The sculpture was built for the Burning Man Festival and then installed on Treasure Island in 2011. In 2013 a weatherproofing project was started and the lighting was upgraded. The sculpture is lighted at 8:30 each night.

Bliss Dance is displayed under a Use Permit between Treasure Island Development Authority, the artist, and the Black Rock Arts Foundation:

“The sculpture, of a dancing woman, stands 40 feet tall, weighs 7000 pounds and is ingeniously constructed of triangulated geodesic struts. By day, the dancer’s ‘skin’, made of stainless steel mesh, shimmers in the sun. By night, it alights brilliantly with a complex array of 1000 slowly changing l.e.d. colored lights. Viewers may interact with and manipulate the lighting effects with an iPhone application. The dancer’s delicate, graceful form precariously balances on one foot, adding to the astonishing impression of imminent movement and lifelike presence.”

Bliss Dance is a truly unique work, the artist’s dedication reads:

Bliss
You cannot fail to express beauty, profound beauty.
Your life shinning through your eyes
Past your fears and disappointments,
To show up for this moment
Is as beautiful as any thing could be.
—Marco Cochrane

Sometime when you’re crossing the new Bay Bridge on your way to or from SF take a little detour to Yerba Buena Island and follow the road through the gates of Treasure Island and along the Avenue of the Palms—you can’t miss the statue; it’s 40 feet tall.
